My MSc research is focused on snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) population ecology in the Kluane region of the Yukon Territory. The Yukon Valley research dates back to the late 1980s and has been successful at tracking the 10-year population cycle in hare abundance, including rate of survival and cause of death. I am interested in the predator-prey interactions between snowshoe hares and their three primary predators: lynx, coyotes, and raptor, and how these dynamics may change through the cycle and with time. With the rapidly changing environment, my research aims to examine the shift, if there is any, in predation rates between predator species. Understanding the dynamics of predation in snowshoe hares is crucial as they are a keystone species in the boreal forest and any shift in their predation risk or mortality agents could have profound impacts to the boreal forest ecosystem.
