Kevin ChanMy Masters research examines methods of detecting population cycles and periodicity in time series data. Population cycles are a little understood phenomenon and separating stable or changing cycles from noise and chaos has proven challenging. In the past, time series analysis of population cycles has relied on Non-linear time series modeling (NLTSM) and spectral analysis as diagnostic probes for determining periodicity. New methods from other fields such as physics, pure mathematics, and economics have been used increasingly in biology, however, verification of the accuracy of these methods have been lacking.
My first goal is to determine which methods produce the most accurate and reliable results using simulations run on time series with known parameters. Once this is completed, a more rigorous protocol for can be established for investigating periodic events. My second goal is to use these methods to investigate large mega-databases such as the Global Population Dynamics Database (GPDD) for evidence of cycling among different taxa and elucidate possible trends in the incidence of cycles in populations. |
