I am broadly interested in species conservation and wildlife management. My research will focus on Small-mouthed Salamanders on Pelee Island, which is home to Canada’s only population of this species. They have been listed as endangered both federally and provincially. Habitat degradation and decreasing water levels pose a particular threat to these salamanders. Their habitat use and movement patterns are not well understood, despite the relevance of this information for use in effective habitat management and protection for salamanders as well as other species. In my research, a model will be developed to identify suitable habitats, as well as areas where breeding habitat and wildlife corridors can be enhanced, across conservation land on Pelee Island. Field data will then be collected and used to validate the model. This work will lead to more effective species conservation and management under increasing threats to the salamander populations due to climate change.
