Crystal KellyMy masters’ research will assess the dynamics of Eastern Population Sandhill Cranes in Ontario. This population has exhibited a recent rebound and continues to grow despite previously facing near extinction due to overexploitation and habitat change. Little is known of Sandhill Cranes, and this is particularly true of the Eastern Population. Sandhill Cranes are a particularly difficult species to manage given their longevity, and low recruitment rates. By using a combination of previous demographic estimates, current population surveys, and genetic analysis I hope to develop a more accurate model that can be used for future management decisions in Ontario.
